I would recommend it to anyone looking for a peek into the Calcutta of the fifties. Set inmost of the observations the author My best read of The descriptions and events were too real to consider the novel as a piece of fiction.

While it is a novel with a few main characters appearing through the entire book, it could be just as easy to present Chowringheeas a series of short stories.
Underpinning all this is an inescapable misogyny, women predictably polarised between the mother and the whore. The poverty of working and jobless Calcuttans is vividly portrayed, as those not in the upper echelon are only one stroke of bad luck away from living in the streets or in dilapidated hovels. Sankar was to go on to write urgent, tighter, more morally truthful novels, such as The Middlemanbut Chowringhee remains, above everything else, an unruffled photograph of a city, important as a record of a particular time but frozen, both as a snapshot and in its conservatism.
Characters that I’d fall in love with would disappear when their tale ended, to be replaced by the next. It, however, chowrknghee just too dramatic towards the end where, I believe, certain events could have been prevented. But yes, it’s chowringhwe a short read and you may require some patience.

The book is a banquet of stories served by a wide-eyed narrator, rather confusingly named Shankar and shaped by the hotel he comes to work in, the same Shahjahan.
Shankar’s real name is Mani Shankar Mukherjee. Poor young man in calcutta lands a job in an upscale hotel. Each of the characters is portrayed beautifully and true to nature. I felt comfortable every time that I opened it, knowing that I would thoroughly enjoy the next hour or two. The manager, Marco Polo, takes a liking to him as well, and young Shankar is given more responsibilities by both men.
A nice read, a light book which one can read at his own pace. The glamorous yet naive air hostess Sujata Mitra, the Goan singer Gomez who might have gone past his prime but in spirits remains as fresh as the melodies of Mozart and Beethoven, Karabi the beautiful hostess for the guests of Suite No.
It is a kind of book which one should read while travelling. Something about their use of English is both charming and erudite.
